WALDEMAR JANZEN

August 7, 1932 - May 19, 2026

On May 19, 2026, Waldemar Janzen passed away peacefully at Victoria Hospital at the age of 93 years.

Waldemar was born on August 7, 1932, in the Mennonite village of Ohrloff in South Russia during the era of the brutal Stalinist regime, through which he lost his father at an early age. As a young child, he experienced the horrors of the Second World War. By 1943, he and his mother were among the thousands of people fleeing Russia. As refugees, they made their way to Bavaria in Germany and immigrated to Canada, arriving in Waterloo, Ontario, in 1948. Here, Waldemar was able to go to school and begin his teaching career. In 1956, he was hired to teach German and Biblical Studies at Canadian Mennonite Bible College in Winnipeg, a small but forward-looking college where he remained for 46 years, teaching, preaching, and lecturing at the college and in the wider church and community.

Sabbatical years allowed him to further his education and to focus on his favourite area of study, the Old Testament.

After almost 66 years of marriage, Waldemar leaves to mourn his passing his wife Mary (Warkentin); and his children, Martin (London, UK), Hildi (Winnipeg), and Edwin (Montreal).

The funeral service for Waldemar Janzen will be held on Friday, May 29, 2026, at First Mennonite Church, 922 Notre Dame Avenue, Winnipeg, at 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of floral tributes, donations in Waldemar's memory may be made to Canadian Mennonite University or Mennonite Central Committee.

Rest in Peace.
